When you read materials actively, you can absorb them in depth, understand them effectively, and retain them for a long time. One helpful tool for doing this is the SQ3R method. We’ll show you how it works. But it does take some practice.

- Lesen Sie dazu entweder einen eigenen Text oder Textteil (z.B. ein Kapitel). Dieser sollte zu Übungszwecken mindestens zwei DIN A4-Seiten umfassen.
- Oder wählen Sie unseren Übungstext.

Lesen Sie den Text bzw. Textabschnitt.
Suchen Sie Antworten auf Ihre Fragen. Wenn Sie beim Lesen auf eine Antwort stoßen, so formulieren Sie diese kurz in Gedanken oder in Worten aus.
- Falls Sie Ihre bisherigen Fragen verändern, oder falls Sie neue Fragen an den Text stellen wollen, so tun Sie das immer schriftlich und nur, wenn es Ihnen wirklich wichtig ist!
- Kennzeichnen Sie unklare und wichtige Stellen wie z.B. Fachbegriffe für die spätere Bearbeitung.
- Machen Sie sich Notizen mit selbst formulierten Stichworten. Verwenden Sie eine Ihnen vertraute Symbolsprache, z. B. Pfeile, Fragezeichen und Ausrufezeichen.
Read the text or section of text. Look for answers to your questions. If you run across an answer as you are reading, briefly flesh it out in your thoughts or in words. - If you want to change your previous questions or ask new questions about the text, be sure to always do so in writing and only if it is really important to you.
- Mark items that are unclear and important, such as specialized terms, to return to later.
- Take notes, using your own key terms. Use symbols that are familiar to you, such as arrows, question marks, and exclamation points.

Decken Sie den Text zu, so dass Sie ihn nicht lesen können. Überprüfen Sie, was Sie wirklich verstanden und behalten haben!
1) Machen Sie eine mündliche Zusammenfassung, indem Sie sich selbst laut vorsprechen oder einem Zuhörer erzählen:
- Was war für Sie wesentlich?
- Welche Antworten haben Sie auf Ihre Fragen gefunden?
Schritt 1 ist nicht immer nötig. Er ist vor allem bei komplexen Texten sinnvoll oder wenn Sie besonders gründlich arbeiten wollen.
2) Fassen Sie das für Sie Wesentliche und die Antworten auf Ihre Fragen schriftlich zusammen.
Tipp 1: Wenden Sie bei Bedarf die graphischen Methoden des Mindmapping an.
Tipp 2: Formulieren Sie sowohl mündlich als auch schriftlich möglichst in eigenen Worten.
Cover the text so you can’t read it. Go over what you really understood and retained. 1) Put together an oral summary by explaining the following aloud to yourself or a listener: - What were the key points you identified?
- What answers did you find to your questions?
Step 1 is not always necessary. It is a good idea when dealing with complex texts in particular, or if you want to work especially thoroughly. 2) Write down a summary of what you felt the key points were and the answers to your questions.
Tip 1: Use the graphic methods of mind mapping as needed. Tip 2: Put things in your own words wherever possible, both orally and in writing.

Lesen Sie abschlieflend den Text noch ein letztes Mal durch, und überprüfen Sie, ob sein Inhalt mit ihrer schriftlichen Zusammenfassung übereinstimmt.
Im dritten Arbeitsschritt haben Sie eventuell unklare Textstellen markiert. Formulieren Sie diese Unklarheiten als Fragen und suchen Sie nach Antworten im Text. Falls das nicht gelingt, notieren Sie wichtige offene Fragen und klären Sie später, wo sie Antworten bekommen können (z.B. in Büchern oder bei Kommilitonen).
Ergänzen Sie anschlieflend gegebenenfalls Ihre schriftliche Zusammenfassung.
Then read through the text one last time and review whether the content matches your written summary. You may have marked passages of the text that were unclear to you in the third work step. Formulate these areas that are unclear as questions and look for answers in the text. If you can’t find them, note important open questions and clarify later where you can turn for answers (books, for example, or fellow students).
