There are various approaches to researching literature:

You can search current journals in your discipline for thematically relevant essays and then work your way through previous years of that journal as well. You can also do the same with monographs, collected volumes, reference works, electronic media, and other suitable sources.

Start your search with a text you already know or discovered first. You can use the bibliography for that text to track down other sources, turn to their bibliographies for still other sources, and so on.

Starting with one central text, you can search for authors who have worked on that text, either analyzing or citing it.

Keywords that narrow down the topic you want to research as precisely as possible can help you search databases for literature. Keyword searches typically involve a “free text search” or a search in “all fields,” meaning that these terms are used to search all bibliographic information, not just the title.

Things to bear in mind when choosing your sources

  • Sources must be published. (Discuss any exceptions with your examiner.)
  • The source must be of reputable origin.
  • Sources should meet scholarly and scientific standards.
  • Subject-specific literature takes precedence over general reference works.
  • Term papers should generally rely on both monographs and essays from scientific or scholarly journals and collections.
  • Articles from weekly or daily newspapers can also be used if they are helpful for things like analyzing current issues in practice or cite certain data and facts.

Once you have obtained and analyzed your literature and sources, you should review and adjust or specify your specific topic, hypotheses, and methodology.

lThe Freie Universität University Library has produced a series of videos on working with the Primo library portal. These videos can be helpful when searching for literature if you are not yet familiar with the system’s search and filter functions, for example: www.fu-berlin.de/sites/ub/lernangebote/e_learning/index.html
