Mafic-plutonic sand, Antofagasta, Chile


 

Location:

North Chile, end of road along coast approx. 10 km south of Antofagasta.

Provenance:

Gabbroid rocks on western slope of the Cerro Coloso.

Composition:

White plagioclase, black hornblende, absence of quartz.

 

Texture:

Coarse sand, poorly sorted, almost not transported detritus.

Comments:

The Cerro Coloso is a "core complex" of mafic, plutonic rocks. They are found at > 1000 m on top of the cliff. The slope is described as an "angle of repose" and is covered by salt incrusted gravel and dune sands.
