Who are we?

The Open Science Working Group was initially established in 2019. At present in 2025 it is in the process of reorientation and transformation to further strengthen its impact within and beyond Freie Universität Berlin. 

We are a group of researchers, educators, students, and librarians who are interested in promoting the principles and values of Open Science/Research at Freie Universität Berlin.

We welcome like-minded people from all disciplines and parts of the university to discuss open science practices, ideas, views, news, and skills.

What are we doing?

The members of the Open Science Working Group meet up about once a month to discuss current topics in Open Science/Research, exchange ideas about ongoing projects and to plan events together. We are always open to new members and welcome ideas for additional events and opportunities to work together. Monthly meetings are expected to resume in spring 2025.

What is Open Science/Research? 

Open Science/Research aims to make all parts of the research cycle spanning knowledge creation, evaluation and communication as accessible, transparent, reproducible and reusable as possible for as many people as possible. It applies to all disciplines, the sciences and the humanities, from archaeology to zoology. Hence the terms ‘Open Science’ and ‘Open Research’ can be used interchangeably and are applied by us in an inclusive, broad manner. Open Science/Research covers (but is not limited to):

• Transparent and reproducible research
• Open access to research publications
• Research data sharing
• Open educational resources
• Open source research software and code
• Open hardware
• Open research infrastructure
• Open engagement of societal actors
• Open dialogue with other knowledge systems
